There is something special about a Six nations rugby match in Rome , completely different to all the other 6 nations venues and with the kick-off late afternoon you will be able to savour the friendly atmosphere before the game as fans from both teams mingle together in the cafes , bars and restaurants of this beautiful city. Lots of Italians themselves have turned away from the ugly atmosphere of ' calcio ' in Italy to the much warmer atmosphere of rugby and 6 nations rugby in particular and for this rugby is thriving in Italy with all 6 nations rugby matches being shown live on national television.
The Stadio Olimpico an historic venue , host to the 1960 Olympic Games is a suberb stadium with easy access .
The Azzurri confused and frustrated the English during the 2017 6 nations Championship with some unusual tactics at the breakdown, but England still won the match 36-15.
Italy and England have contested a total of 23 rugby test matches since their first meeting in 1991. England maintain a 100% record having won every match but with Italy getting stronger with every six nations, sooner or later an upset is going to happen. Will it be in 2018?
Santo Pietro is our venue for your 6 nations culinary weekend. It lies just below the hilltop village of Fara Sabina and is situated in the Olive groves, Vines and Orchards. It was built by the Benedictine Monks from nearby Farfa abbey on top of pre-existing Roman ruins in the early middle ages. The building had served as the first line of defence for one of Europe's most powerful abbeys.
It has been transformed into what we see today, a fine restored country house with a lovely restaurant where people travel from miles around to taste its freshly prepared local produce .
Its also the venue for the welcome dinner .
This is the perfect place to relax with its lounging areas, lawned gardens, fine swimming pool and comfortable en-suite bedrooms
Santo Pietro grow themselves the vast majority of their produce as well as producing first class extra virgin olive oil - Sabina DOP.
Gusto al Borgo
Paula's love for cooking was born since she was a child and played in her grandparent’s restaurant inside Rome's Cinecitta movie studios.
From her mother, a refined and exacting cook, she learned the secrets and techniques of Italian cuisine and by attending a number of specialised in- depth courses.
She practiced her cooking with passion in a few small yet gourmet restaurants, afterwards she wanted to transfer her experience, passion and love for traditional Italian food and pass on her knowledge and experience.
That’s why with Franco she set up Gusto al Borgo Cooking School, where people come from all over the world to learn Italian recipes, as well as professional foreign chefs who come to be trained acquiring an overall good knowledge of Italian cuisine that they will practice in their everyday professional lives.
Saturday after our culinary lesson and dinner with Paula at Gusto al Borgo we complete our Saturday with a fine wine tasting , tasting a selection of wines from throughout Italy.
Sunday morning after breakfast we make our way to Rome and our morning tour finishing just in time for a light lunch and a pre-match aperitivo and to soak up and savour the atmosphere in Rome's historic Piazzas and at the Stadio Olimpico.
All tickets are official 6 nations rugby Italy tickets are guaranteed and are situated in the Curva Sud section of the stadium.
Rome has two International airports . Rome Fiumicino ( for the National airlines BA , Aer Lingus etc ) and Rome Ciampino for Ryanair.
For those arriving in Rome Fiumicino airport ( FCO ) , guests would take the excellent train service from inside the airport ( €13 euros - 2017).
As your train is departing the airport you would simply send us a text message and then we would know exactly what time you would arrive locally at Fara Sabina and we would be there to meet you. It is all very simple and safe and we have not lost anyone yet!
For those arriving at Rome Ciampino airport ( CIA ) we would collect you in person and transfer you ourselves to Santo Pietro - We don't charge for this.
I couldn't have enjoyed myself more if I tried. The host Mark made us feel like home away from home, warm and welcoming you were instantly at ease. The accommodation was lovely, spacious and set in the foothill of Sabina with amazing views. Our welcome lunch was at the home of friends and we were made to feel right at home. In fact the whole weekend was a wonderful array of food and great to experience a fantastic opportunity of a cooking lesson. So much fun as you could hear from the chatter in the kitchen. The experience of the winery was just amazing so open and giving. Plenty of wine tasting and something very different in the olive oil experience, a great education. The weekend was completed in Rome with a tour and a six nations rugby game so elation was an understatement. All in all I could have stayed for much longer but that was all down to the ease of Mark and his organisation but those 3 days felt like a proper break away while we fitted so much in it never felt rushed it would be high on my list of recommendations. Thank you again Mark
